You generally have two years to file a sexual harassment lawsuit in New Jersey Superior Court under the Law Against Discrimination. If you file with the Division on Civil Rights instead, the deadline is 180 days. The two paths work differently, so it helps to choose before either clock runs low.
When the clock starts
The time usually runs from the harassing conduct or the adverse action. When harassment is ongoing, older acts can sometimes be included along with the most recent one. Do not rely on that without advice, because it depends on the facts.
The exception that matters most
Do not confuse the two deadlines. Someone who assumes they have two years and later wants the Division on Civil Rights may find that the 180 days have passed. Federal claims have their own timing as well. A final Division decision can also bar a later lawsuit on the same grievance, so choose the path with care.
What to do now
Write down dates, names and witnesses, and keep any messages you are allowed to keep. Then talk to a lawyer. Read more about sexual harassment claims.
Deadlines depend on the facts of each case. This post is general information, not legal advice.
